Bee Health

Honey bee health issues get increasing attention: beekeepers, policy makers and general public are concerned about the most well known pollinator. First of all, Varroa destructor is still the major threat for honeybee colonies. Though several treatments are available, this parasitic mite is often responsible for colony losses over winter. In addition, documentation for many treatments are incomplete or beekeepers observe a loss of efficacy. Therefore, there is need for developing new treatments, improving existing formulations or acquiring information about clinical and preclinical data.

Emerging pathogens (Nosema ceranae, honey bee viruses) and introduced pests (Small Hive Beetle) concern beekeepers. For these new threats only few to no treatments are available. In addition, their importance varies in different regions. For instance, while Nosema ceranae is an important, though often neglected, threat in Southern Europe, no problems occur in Central and Northern Europe. Therefore, it is important to consider the different beekeeping realities in the development of new therapies.
